Assignment

Design a 11×17 inch double-truck (two facing 8.5 x 11 pages) magazine layout using InDesign. Project will be graded based on use of color, typography and the application of the CRAP design principles as well as your technical skill in InDesign. You will hand in your completed layout in InDesign format to your instructor and post a .jpg version of your layout to the class blog. You will also hand in a project brief analyzing this project.

Requirements

• Project must be one horizontal 11×17 page created in InDesign
• Include at least one image, which can be taken by you or a friend
• Include at least a headline and lede paragraph of your story (two to six sentences.) You may use lorem ipsum fake body type for the rest of the story.
• Use at least one additional design element that requires a text wrap (pull quote, a second photo, shape, etc.)
• Make sure to include a byline and photo credit
• You will be graded on the following technical skills:
• Ability to place and format type (no red boxes at ends of text boxes!)
• Ability to properly place photos (do not stretch or squeeze them!)
• Use of layers and grouping objects
• Use of text wrap
• Use of boxes and lines
• Use of color, strokes and other formatting tools

Rubric for Grading

• Materials‑20 points

Was the project brief completed correctly and handed in on time? Did it properly analyze the project. Was the project filed in the correct format and posted on the blog?

• Design-65 points

Does the layout, as a whole, look clean and pop to engage the reader? Did you apply the rules of CRAP to your layout? How careful were you in choosing your type faces? Is your body type legible and does it work well with the headline font? Did you create contrast between certain elements, such as the headlines, subheads, bylines, pull-quotes, etc.? How well did you use color? Do the colors compliment the photo(s), do they help create contrast between certain elements and are they appropriate for the type of magazine and also the story?

How well does the student understand InDesign? Did they use the skills described above correctly?
